Introduction to Project Management Knowledge Areas

There are various techniques needed to manage a project. These techniques are more like practical methodologies used in formulating a project and managing the project resources. Use of the techniques greatly affects the project outcome. These techniques are known as Project Management Knowledge Areas.

During the course of the project, the project manager may find himself coordinating with many other department and sometimes performing management activities that are related to other management disciplines. In a way project management is related to other management disciplines and this Relationship with other management disciplines is essential for a project to be successful. Few examples of such related disciplines are law, strategic planning, logistics, human resource management and domain knowledge.

There are nine knowledge areas:

  1. Project Integration Management: This deals with processes that integrate different aspects of project management.
  2. Project Scope Management: This deals with processes that are responsible for controlling project scope.
  3. Project Time Management: This deals with processes concerning the time constraints of the project.
  4. Project Cost Management: This deals with processes concerning the cost constrains of the project.
  5. Project Quality Management: This deals with the processes that assure that the project meets its quality standards.
  6. Project Human Resources Management: This deals with the processes related to obtaining and managing the project team.
  7. Project Communication Management: This deals with the processes concerning communication mechanisms of a project.
  8. Project Risk Management: This deals with the processes concerned with project risk management.
  9. Project Procurement Management: This deals with processes related to obtaining products and services needed to complete a project.

Each knowledge area has a set of project management processes involved. In total, there are 44 Project Management Processes. All these 44 Project management processes are mapped to these nine project management knowledge areas. These knowledge areas are also not independent of each other but they are somewhat interrelated. Each of these knowledge areas requires careful attention during project planning.
